The ongoing shift from conventional cage to alternative housing for layers necessitates a deeper understanding of how commercial rearing systems impact physical development in pullets. My thesis examined the effect of three styles of rearing aviaries, differing in the opportunities for load-bearing exercise available during early life, and conventional rearing cages on musculoskeletal characteristics and proximate composition in two consecutive flocks of Lohmann Brown Lite (B) and Lohmann Select Leghorn Lite (W) laying hen pullets.

Fish farming facilities are rapidly intensifying their operations in order to meet the increased demand for aquaculture products worldwide. As a result, fish farming populations are exposed to increased stressors such as higher bacterial load and higher incidence of injury, leading to higher incidences of mortalities. Immunomodulators can improve an organism’s response to stress by augmenting the immune response via enhancement or inhibition.

Heat stress can negatively impact the sustainability and productivity of a dairy production system even in temperate regions such as Canada. A possible mitigation strategy is to use genetic selection to improve heat tolerance. However, it is difficult to study heat stress using weather station data due to the sparsity of stations and inconsistencies within datasets. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of heat stress and to estimate genetic parameters for heat tolerance in Canadian Holsteins using an alternative meteorological data resource known as NASA POWER.

We plan to have a job board for industry and academic positions. The event will be held virtually June 21-23, 2021 beginning at 9am MT (11am ET).

The objective of this dissertation was to identify different management and nutritional factors that help to im-prove weaning success of dairy calves fed higher levels of milk. The first study was focused on comparing the effects of two gradual weaning programs when calves were fed two levels of milk on feed consumption, growth, and health. In general, the two gradual weaning programs resulted in similar performance and health outcomes, while both milk level treatments resulted in similar feed intakes and performance postweaning.
